Former Commissioner Liaqat Ali Chatha has apologized for his statement about rigging In Rawalpindi Division. He has admitted before Election Commission of Pakistan in hearing on his allegations that he was pushed by a leader of a political party (PTI) to issue this statement. The leader belongs to Lahore. I was near the retirement and I wanted to secure my future.
This is the mindset and state of mind of the high level bureaucracy of Pakistan. Liaqat spent 32 years at superior services (services so called actually they are authoritarians there) as deputy commissioner and commissioner. His retirement was due on 13 March 2024 when last week he shocked everyone in the country by stating that he had to make the returning officers change the results in all 13 National Assembly constituencies in Rawalpindi division. As expected the next day all Returning Officers rejected his statement.
He recorded statement before the ECP’s investigative committee on 22 Feb 2024.
He said, ” I was under huge pressure due to retirement. I did not direct any Returning Officer (RO) or interfere in anyone’s support during the general election of 2024. I never instructed any Returning Officer to show favoritism or intervene in the election process. I was scheduled to retire on March 13, 2024. I had concerns about potential loss of benefits in the future. I deeply regret my statement and offer a sincere apology to the nation,”
According to his own statement , he developed close relations with the party leader when he was posted in Punjab as provincial secretary. I wanted to safe my future in that party. The party official went into hiding due to involvement in the May 9 incidents, I was in touch with him and also used to assist him secretly.
